Which Punch Needle Should I Buy?
Which Punch Needle Should I Buy?
The most popular brands in the market & our recommendation.
It is more challenging to start a hobby than to do the hobby itself. There is a lot of material and brands in the market so it can be really hard to decide which one to buy? Or to decide which one suits you better? This process always makes me so stressed and most people gave up on this process. I will summarize and recommend the best punch needles in the market that I have experienced.
Here are the most common needles in the market and I will be comparing these brands;
- Oxford Punch Needle
- Lavor Punch Needle
- Plastic Adjustable Punch Needle
- Embroidery Punch Needle
You can find a detailed explanation and review for each of the various options in the following.
Oxford Punch Needles
Oxford punch needle is made of good quality wood and stainless steel. It has a very aesthetic view and is well designed for your hand to suit. That’s why it can be way expensive if we compare it with the other brands. There are two sizes of Oxford punch needle; Regular and Fine. And they have different sizes for each. You can work with different sizes from chunky yarns to finer yarn.
Oxford Regular Size Needle is more for chunky yarns that you can use for designs that have a bigger area to punch. It has different three sizes #8, #9, and #10. Whit these different sizes you can have different heights of stitches. When the number goes higher for the sizes, the stitch height goes smaller.
Oxford Finer Size Needle is more for finer yarns that are thinner, medium yarns like cotton yarns. You can work with this punch needle if you have designed it with more detailed work and need more attention and care. It has different five sizes #8, #9, #10, #13 and #14 .

Lavor Punch Needles
They are made of recycled plastic handles and stainless steel needles. Has a good suit form to your hand. Both types are adjustable which means you can have a variety of loop heights.
Adjustable Lavor Punch Needles come with a metal wire so that you can thread your yarn easier. As we can understand from the name we can adjust it easily to different sizes to have different loop heights. I really recommend to beginners start with this kind since it is more budget-friendly and has options of sizes to work with. With this type, you can work with chunky yarns which have 4-6mm thickness.
Regular Lavor Punch Needles come with three different needles that you can change the needle from the handle. But with this one, we can only work with finer yarns that have smaller thicknesses like 2-4mm. So if you have a detailed and small design to work you can choose this type of needle.
Plastic Adjustable Punch Needles
This type of needle is made of a plastic handle and steel needle. It comes with an iron wire to thread the yarns to the needle. It has 4 different sizes to adjust; #A, #B, #C and #D. It does not really have the best quality of material as the Oxford punch needle is but it works well and is super budget-friendly. You can work with chunky and bulky yarns which have 4-5mm thickness.
Embroidery Punch Needles
There are lots of brands for this type of needle; the most common ones are Rico Design, EUOW, Ultra Punch, etc… This type of needle is commonly used for really detailed and small works like embroidery. The needle itself can be adjustable and has an extra needle that you can change as well. So the variety of loops and stitches sizes is huge. But as I mentioned before the needle eye is really smaller if we compare it with the other punch needles that’s why it is mostly for embroidery work and small detailed works.
In conclusion, there are a lot of brands, types, and sizes of needles on the market. You can decide what you want to work with first and then choose the proper material by considering your work. I really recommend Lavor Punch needles and Plastic adjustable needles for beginners since they have a variety of sizes and budget-friendly materials. They are all really easy to reach and possible to find even in the local markets but you can also order them on online platforms like; Amazon, Aliexpress for a reasonable price.
